911 tapes released in Omaha mall shooting

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - For almost 30 harrowing minutes, Jodi Longmeyer recounted to a 911 dispatcher what she could see and hear of a teenage gunman's deadly rage in a mall department store - and then broke down, she said Friday.

As she told the dispatcher she could see Robert A. Hawkins' body lying next to a gun, her voice cracked, and she began to cry - a mixture of sadness and relief that the crisis was over. Nine people, including the gunman, were dead.

"I had seen more than I wanted to see," Longmeyer told NBC's "Today" show Friday, describing the call.

Longmeyer, who is a human resources manager at Von Maur, agonized with the operator while barricaded in an employee locker room at the store. Tapes of her 911 call were released Thursday, a day after the tragedy unfolded.

The last Nimitz-class aircraft carrier is under construction in ...

The design of the USS Nimitz began in 1964, and the 10-ship class has lasted longer than previous classes.

"The Nimitz class … represents the largest number of carriers of any type of any nation built to the same basic design since World War II," according to Norman Polmar, author of "The Naval Institute’s Guide to the Ships and Aircraft of the U.S. Naval Fleet." He termed the Nimitz’s longevity "a remarkable and probably unique life span for a warship design."

The USS Nimitz was commissioned in 1975, and the George H.W. Bush — the last of the ships — will be deactivated in 2059, after 50 years of service.

That’s a possible 84 years of the same basic design on the seas.

The Nimitz class borrowed from previous carriers. The flight deck layout is essentially unchanged from the USS Kitty Hawk and John F.

Imax Parlays a Huge Screen and 3-D Tech Into an Experience You Can't ...

Today, Imax is also in the business of screening concerts, 3-D animation, and Hollywood blockbusters such as I Am Legend or the latest Harry Potter flick. The company is breaking out of museums as well: Soon, you're likely to see one of its supersize screens pop up at a nearby multiplex.

Imax's towering images and stunning sound quality have always been an easy sell for audiences. But the enormous cost of producing that experience has long limited the company's growth. Now it's possible to convert a standard Hollywood film into the big-screen format, but just a few years ago, only Imax's Volkswagen-size cameras could produce an Imax film. In July, the company will take another leap and move from a film-based system to a digital format. Movies that were previously delivered in unwieldy, 600-pound film canisters (requiring a special forklift) will now arrive on a hard drive.

Living with Vista, one year on

The other problem is of much greater concern to me, there have been over 30 processes identified that report information back to MS without user intervention, knowledge or consent. The fact that these exist, what they report, and what is done with that information is simply not information that MS deems that we need to know, so we are not told. This is also unacceptable.

A year later, my two biggest concerns, that MS can shut me down on a whim, and that they can take any or all of my data without me knowing or being able to stop it are still unacceptable. I can't see how any CxO in good conscience can run this software, much less put anything even remotely considered mission critical on it. Do they just not get the risks, are they abjectly stupid, or were they bought off?

Judging from the absurdly low adoption and, for MS, scary high downgrade numbers, the majority seem to agree with me.

State Patrol follows suggestions for lab fixes

The State Patrol announced Thursday that it has followed 23 recommendations of three recent audits aimed at fixing problems at its toxicology lab, and it is working to implement 16 more.

At the same time, Fiona Couper has been appointed to take over as the new state toxicologist. She most recently served as chief toxicologist in Washington, D.C.

The move is a reflection of the heavy workload of current toxicologist Barry Logan, who will continue to oversee the state's toxicology and crime labs but will no longer run the toxicology lab on a daily basis, State Patrol spokesman Bob Calkins said.

The patrol underwent three audits after toxicology lab problems surfaced that have threatened drunken-driving prosecutions around the state.

Last summer, toxicology lab manager Ann Marie Gordon was accused of signing off on work she hadn't done.

Transformers (Two-Disc Special Edition)

"From director Michael Bay and executive producer Steven Spielberg comes a thrilling battle between the Autobots and the Decepticons. When their epic struggle comes to Earth, all that stands between the evil Decepticons and ultimate power is a clue held by Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf)." "Transformers (Two-Disc Special Edition)" is rated PG-13. The Movie: I've been a fan of Transformers as long as they've been around. I bought the original G1 toys. I read all the Marvel Comics. I watched the cartoons. I saw the animated movie. I bought the soundtrack. I have "The Touch." So it was with a mixture of eager anticipation and dread that I awaited the live action "Transformers" movie. I was glad to hear that Steven Spielberg was involved, but I was a bit worried about Michael Bay's storytelling abilities.

Councilman MikeK Recalls Knievel Action Figure

Top: Young MikeK playing with Evel Knievel action figure; bottom: MikeK receives inspiration from his childhood friends before leaving for a Coeur d'Alene City Council meeting.

I had a classic Evel Knievel motorcycle riding action figure when I was a kid. The stunts my brothers and I would stage for that motorcycle toy were legendary (riding out a second story window, chasing the dog around the house without getting chewed to ribbons, you name it). RIP Evel. I wonder what happened to Steve Austin, the Six Million Dollar Man who played the role of Evel's arch-nemesis in the boyhood action figure wars?/Councilman MikeK.

Question: What was your favorite action figure/doll when you were little?
